Nightlife in Vilnius. Part I: live music.

Post'as, kuri parasiau i puslapi www.cometovilnius.com, bet kadangi nesu isitikinus, kad ji ides del pernelyg persamos asmenines nuomones, is hedonistiniu paskatu idedu ji cia:)

I remember working as a barmaid at a cafe called „Cozy“ a few years ago. I had foreigners coming to me and asking „Where could we go out tonight? We wanna dance!”. This question was even worse than asking for latte (which i didn’t know how to make…) because I couldn’t give them an answer. Later i created a system: “Do you prefer live music than DJs?”, i asked.
a) if the answer was “yes”, i suggested them live music club “Tamsta” (link’as www.tamstaclub.lt) in the old town.
b) if the answer was “no”, i pointed out club “Gravity” (link’as www.clubgravity.lt) on the map and called them a cab.
Unfortunately, the situation has not much changed. Try searching a list of lithuanian clubs on club.lt and you’ll get 32 different names, but only few of them are worth seeing and some does not even exist anymore. Let’s start with a live music.

Above mentioned “Tamsta” is a nice, cozy and trendy club working every Wednesday to Saturday, having live gigs on a Soviet Time-style stage. Each week the program is complemented by well-known and recognized Lithuanian bands as well as bands from abroad. Young and starting musicians are also very welcome here – on Wednesdays “Open Mic” evenings take place where every single club visitor is welcome to sing and / or play together with the house warming band. On Thursdays rising stars are featured. Fridays and Saturdays - the stardom nights: spectacular concerts by both local and foreign bands take place.
And you can’t shut your eyes to a trendy interior the club has. A huge simulation of a guitar used as a drink shelf at the end of the bar, and sitting-friendly percussions – you can’t find it anywhere else. And, rather unusual for other lithuanian clubs, the atmosphere is particulary friendly! “It doesn’t matter how old you are or what your occupation may be, here you will certainly find the music you like in a nice company of raving people” is a slogan of the club. I have a different definition for rave but everything else is totally correct.
Go to “Tamsta” if you want to have a warm-harted time.

At the beginning of 2007 a new live music club (linkas http://www.lamourbar.lt/) has stood up into the Lithuanian clubbing market. A cheezy name “L’amour” and a bit sleek design but a perfect location for foreigners. It’s at the end of the noisiest night part of Vilnius, called Vokieciu street, and just around the corner of the Town Hall. Started with a wry programme they seemed not to know what to do with that club. But they mooved on and now you can hear some well-known bands or artists performing and disco‘s raving afterwards. Although i don‘t feel very confident about the audience they attrack. But as i say „even They have to have a place to entertain“. Go to „L‘amour“ if some one of lithuanian‘s is asking you. He/she might have a reason, which i don‘t know yet.

For those loving live music try cafe at „Mokytoju Namu Kiemelis“ aka „Terasa“ or pub „Artistai“(www.artistai.lt) at summer time. They have open air stages for bands to perform. Usually nothing huge, but quite interesting if you want to see the underground of Lithuanian live music. You might also try pub „BIX“ (www.bix.lt), „Brodvejus“ (www.brodvejus.lt), club „Life“.

Don‘t worry, I‘ll talk about real rave next time...
